Baby Ducks, Tortured Monkeys and a "Strange Situation": UPDATED HARLOW LINK

Please make sure you watch all three of the following videos. They relate to pages 370 - 373.

Konrad Lorenz and Imprinting

Mary Ainsworth and Attachment Studies

Harry Harlow and Contact Comfort, UPDATE: sorry about the bad link earlier. The following article appeared in the Boston Globe a few years back and does a good job explaining the impact of Harlow's research on both Psychology and the Animal Right's Movement.

  3. The Attachment studies video was nice to me in a way. By the baby being so attached to its mother I thought that was nice. The Imprinting video was weird, but it was cool that they had control over the ducks and they followed everywhere the man went. The last video I saw with the monkeys I don't think they should have done that to the monkeys especially take them away from their mothers cause as you can see at the end they don't like being alone , but the end was funny to me. The last video was removed by the user.

  4. I agree with Dillon that The Imprinting video was weird. I would get tired of ducks following me around. I still don't understand what made the ducks follow him because the video didnt have any audio. The attachment studies video showed how the baby was attached to its mother and only felt safe in its mother's presence. The contact comfort video showed how the monkey's always went for comfort, instead of milk. This video illustrates that primates (including humans) are not only attached to their mother they provide them with food, but also because of their protection. It was sad to see the monkey alone. He looked so scared. And I tried to view the last video but obviously it was removed by the user.

  5. I enjoyed the video about attachment. Somehow, i knew all along how the child was going to react once her mother left the room. My sister actually acts the same way! Konrad Lorenz's video was pretty cool, even though there wasn't any audio. I like the part showing how he got the ducks to follow him around. It was kind of weird, but cool. There was one video missing i believe, but I did watch the one about Harlow's Monkeys. I had no idea that isolation as a child can be detrimental to oneself in the future! Sad to see those monkeys tortured and ruined for life..

  6. Waaaaiiiitttt I thought the imprinting video last year had sound!!!!!!!!!! But I guess… After watching the Harlows Monkey video I thought it was sad for the monkeys to be taken from their mother just to be an experiment, but on the positive side it did lead to a great question at the end of the video. The Strange Situation by Mary Ainsworth in reality is not so strange. I have seen it happen plenty of times with my little cousins and their mothers. But what if the situation was vice versa and the father was the care giver will a baby still cry if the father left the room despise what society shapes our roles in life to be????....

  7. Ok the Imprinting video was interesting, but definitely wierd to me in a sense. I didn't understand why the ducks were following the man around and it had no audio which made the video even more strange. I thought the Attachment Studies video was the most interesting because it demonstrated how babies only feel secure when their mothers are around them and how they react when their mothers leave from around them. I thought it was nice; I witness this occurance all the time with my nephew and my sister. After watching Harry Harlow's Contact Comfort video I was a bit sad, I felt sorry for the little monkies when they were placed in a room by themselves. They were soo cute and I think early isolation can damage a human child for life as well because they won't feel secured or safe when they are alone once they get older and are able to do things on their own. But hey who knows, it's just my guess!

  9. OMG! I LOVED IT! I thought I was tripping at first when I didn't hear a sound on the imprinting video so I watched it over and over. That was funny how those ducks chased that women and swam with that man. I really didn't think animals can have no kind of attraction or connection with a human until I saw that. Question? Was that right for mary to do that experiment on a child. because I don't think psychologists are allowed to do things like that anymore. That could have damaged that child. Anyway these videos were very easy to comprehend except the one with the monkeys. WTF! I thought he was crazy! I just want to know why you removed the last one. It must was inappropriate huh?

  10. well, the imprinting video was sort of crazy. I thought something was wrong with the computer when the man started to move his lips and there was no audio which would have helped me understand the video a little more. Overall i liked the impronting video especially when the man began to run and the ducks ran faster and faster to catch up. The attachment video was kinda obvious and just as ladon stated i see this reachtion in everyday life because my cousins hardly ever react until their mother leaves the room. I thought the contact comfront video was very imformative, because usually i would think a baby would cling to the mother that provides them with food rather than something that feels like a mother but doesnt supply anything.

  11. I agree with yella,MARY AINSWORTH experiment did seem kind of cruel to the child as if to play with the childs emotions. Anyway I could have done that experiment myself with Joellen baby and his father. He is actually worst than lil Lisa, her mom can leave her sight but she just can not leave the room but jayden start to cry soon as his daddy leaves his sight. LOL, I LOOKED AT THE IMPRINTING VIDEO FIVE TIMES UNTIL I REALIZED THAT IT WAS SOUNDLESS.

  13. PEOPLE IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY IDEA ABOUT THE VIDEO WITH THE MONKEY DON'T FEEL BAD BECAUSE I FEEL YOUR PAIN. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS I UNDERSTAND BECAUSE I READ ABOUT THIS IN THE BOOK DUH....:-) Lol

  14. First off the video that painted the most clearest picture is the one with the mother and stranger in the room ect. the imprinting video did not have sound for some reason i don't know if that was intentionally or if that was just a screwed up video but it made no sense to me st all. The video with the monkeys was rather funny it seems as if baby monkeys are born on crack . for one there all jumpy and scared all the time and for two they just look like 10 year victims of crack cocaine. but it made sense just as well as the mother and child attachment experiment. i think we should have more videos involved in teaching the lessons it tends to enhance the idea a little better. My opinion of the monkey experiment is that of course they would choose comfort before food because you only need to eat 3 times a day and lets be honest it doesn't take that long to eat so what will they be doing for the other 21 hour of the day, besides looking for comfort or for protection, i mean they are babies. As far as mother attachment goes i give it 2 thumbs up. no body even more no baby wants to interact with a total stranger its just not human nature and its also scary. So that would explain why most of the time little Lisa would go towards her mother and resist the stranger, i addition to that she had no previous experience with the stranger in order to make a connect such as smell or even vocal pitches.

  15. I understood and enjoyed the attachment video. Though it was a little tormenting it really demonstrated what Ainsworth was trying to explain. I dont think I caugtht the imprinting video though. I guess because there was no sound && i watched it liek 2xs and still didnt get it. Just saw a man oddly attracted to ducks. The contact comfort video was cute with the little monkeys! The beginning kind of had me lost, but the end was more clear when we was pacing back and forth ! lmao

  16. Nice vid, it kind of reminds me of my nephew. But I was never too attached to my gaurdian. Thanks again for the sound i couldn't hear anything and there's a vid missing. Give more videos and a lot less reading. I like this method a little bit better. It gives the viewer an idea on what goes on.

  17. The imprinting video was ackward,,but I understand hows the ducks could really run to catch up with the man. Its makes yu realized how attatched and how much of a an influence a caregivers/parents can have on their child. It also shows the importance of a parent/caregiver is to their offspring.

  18. The attachment video was nice because its a perfect example of most kids today. When i was young I was attached to my mother. The imprinting video was kind of crazy and wtf happened to the sound MANNN!!! LOL And the monkey experiment made sense because who would run to food all of the time. As young children and young animals we all need to feel love and comfort in our lives.

  19. So. . . . . I saw all of these videos already. The imprinting one is my favorite though, the ducks are cute.

  20. I watched the video on attachment. I saw that the baby was interacting with the mother when she they were playing but when the stranger walked in he was looking at her wierdly. The stranger reached down to play with the baby but he was hesitant to play with her. Then the mother walked out the room; te baby began to follow her but the stranger picked him because he was crying. The mother returns and she comforts him, and stranfer walks off.

  21. :) I still like the imprinting video just like Mizzer and Taylor. The Ducks are cute, and it's a good example of how to remeber the concet of imprinting at birth.

  22. Once again Ms. Rious saw these already, but I did enjoy them all and they helped alot.!!

  23. i find all of these videos funny, but yet its cool how the you get the ducks to follow as if you were their parent are caregiver. It's also cool how a infants is attached to their caregiver, but babies are so confused and selfish at that age. I want to imprint a flock of ducks now!lol! but i find it messed up how harlow did that poor monkey but yet that's true and human are the same way.
