Extra ...STRESS!

Get prepared for Tuesday's class by checking out some of these links dealing with stress. Here's a little animation that does a pretty good job of explaining  what happens physiologically during the stress response.

Also, you should check out this general overview of stress and then click on the "Stress Assessment". Tally up your results and respond to this link discussing your current stress level.

Although I think I could guess which of you would qualify as "Type A" personalities, there's nothing like fun psychological questionnaires to self-diagnose! It's a fairly long test, but if you're up for it, respond with an overview of your score and your opinion about it's validity.

big scary ancient stressor!
For those of you really ready to explore the wide world of stress and earn a little extra credit towards S2, check out the APA's page on stress, chose an article and respond.

As always, when you respond make sure that you clearly state which piece your response is about. Also for those of you who haven't already done so, PLEASE finish your break work, which is all conviently located in the post below.

  1. First, I did the Stress Assessment and my total was 1277. I don't know if that's good or bad but I sort of had a feeling that it would turn out that way.

Next, I did the personality questionnaire, which was irritatingly long, by the way. The Snapshot Report says that my impatience/irritability is at 53 out of 100. I spent so much time on this survey and I didn't understand the results at all. I still don't know if I qualify for being type A, by means of this questionnaire.

Finally, I read an article about creativity, titled "4 Ways to Unleash Your Creative Genius". The article starts with proposing the idea that people usual downplay their engagement in creative activities by making themselves believe that they are not creative enough to contribute anything that would be productive. The article goes on further to state how self-expression is healthy and all the great things that come from it. The article then states the four remedies that can cure the uncreative disease that most people face at some point in their life. 1-Think like a child, tap into your inner child for a greater view of imagination. 2-Encourage your inner artist, take your creative spirit on a weekly "artist date". 3-Switch it up, meaning to use your creative juices to change your scenery cause change is good if it works. 4-Practice, by approaching more creative subjects you are expanding your creative knowledge, the more you do it, the better you get at it.

All in all, the article, the assessment, and the questionnaire have taught me things that I will value. It taught me that art can heal us if we let it...Totally a beatles moment...lol

  2. After talling up everything my stress level came out to be 763, I actually thought it would be higher than that. I noticed alot of my stress deals with the uncertainty of my future and how everything will happen.

Then I did the personality test, it wasn't that long to me. It said my interactions with others generally characterized by warmth and tolerance are tinged with impatience and hostility. So I'm a bit of a Type A person. Even though this type A personality is like sprinkles on the whole ice cream cone the test said it can still be detrimental to my friendships with people and things like that. I was not surprised by the out come.

I picked an article called Holiday stress and avoding melt downs. In the beginning of the article it reiterates the process of stress for me first shown in the animation of what happens in the stress response. Once that was in my head it went on to say what contributes to stress during the holiday. We all know last minute shopping, crazy expectaions and unreasonable plans can lead to disappointment. They also say that depression plays a role in stress. In order to avoid the stress avoid the hassle, get everything done ahead of time and be resonable when it comes to what you expect. I can relate to this article because sometimes I don't do something when it should be done and then stress out about it later but I'm sure I don't have to tell you that...lol new year.

All in all this was very informative and I'm glad you provided the animation because it gave me a better understanding of the process. Also I've noticed that alot of stress is easy to avoid but people tend to get themselves into stressful situations.

  3. My experience with the assessment was mind blowing. I now know i am way over stressed. I read Deshandlyn's score of one something and regret to say my score was in the three's. don't know its' that a bad thing but more than likely it is.

Secondly, i read the article about breathing. I was sort of surprised by the article because it spoke of breating being soo highly related to health; such as heart, brain, immune systems and even genes. yes!! Genes. the article spoke of how one can overwhelmingly change their genes using their MIND. Sadly i doubt that assumption because who has ever heard of changing anything using only your mind, but now a days anythings possible. One thing i do wonder about this article and the many stidies that have been done on breathing is that if human beings breathe everyday allday, why aren't more people healthy and live longer lives.

The key is mindful breathing and it really does work.

  5. After taking that personality questionnaire, my Impatience/Irritibility snapshot report was a 31 out 100. However, I have no idea what that means. Does it mean I have a Type A or a Type B Personality? My guess is Type B but IDK. I didn't think the test was as long as you said it would be, it may have taken me at least 25 to 30 mins to do. I can say that I totally disagree with some of the analyzations. It says that whenever I'm stressed or frustrated I lash out at others and end up getting angry or frustrated. First of all, whenever I am stressed out or frustrated I don't take my anger out on others, I just keep my feelings bottled up inside or I'll try to calm and relax my nerves before doing anything. And even more so I would never get angry or frustrated with someone because of something I'm dealing with. Also, they say I generally trust others and open up emotionally to them. I beg to differ because I only share my personal business with my close friends or relatives, who I know I can trust.

Oh yeah does anyone know where I can find the Extra Credit Articles??? I couldn't find them.

  7. !*~EXTRA CREDIT~*!

I read the "Identifying Signs of Stress in Your Children or Teens" article. It was mainly facts about how parents should pay close attention to their children and their behaviors for symptoms of stress. Some ways to identify stress of their child is by watching for negative changes in behavior such as acting irritable or moody; parents should realize that feeling sick can be a symptom of stress( i.e. headaches, stomachaches, etc); be aware of their child's interactions with others( perhaps develop a relationship with other parents and their child's teachers); listen and translate words said by their children to figure out if it's a cause of stress; and lastly, parents need to seek support for their child from a health psychologists( when their child is overwhelmed with stress on a regular basis). I'm glad I read this little article because not only was it interesting, but it was also very informative and I learned alot and although I'm not a parent, I can give advice to my sister, who has a child and maybe use these pointers in the future when I have kids of my own!

  8. ((( extra credit )))
I read the article titled "The Kids Aren't All Right." I found this article to be very interesting because I've experienced a situation when I was very moody and my parents didnt know what was bothering me. I think that parents should be aware of the symptoms of stress and practice effective communication with their children. While reading this article, I also learned that relaxation strategies, exercise, good sleep habits, and good eating habits will help with stress.
I also read the article titled "Ways to Unleash Your Creative Genius." I learned that people usually allow insecurity about their creativity stop them from expressing their ideas. I've noticed that if there's a certain assignment or project I sometimes tell myself "I don't know what to write or draw." Creativity doesnt take much! Self expression is known to reduce stress, enhance immune system, and increase joy. Studies show that children are not as creative as they once were. I agree that the reason for this is because children today are always watching tv or on the computer rather than taking part in imaginative play.

  9. I have read everything and it took a long time because I think I lost some interest. But all is well, after taking the personality questionaire my snapshot report was 37/100. Generally, the review was wrong, idk maybe it was just me.
