Take this one to Heart! (or to the Cerebral Cortex, or wherever)

What's more important brains or determination? You may or may not be surprised by the findings of a research team from the University of Pennsylvania.

Read the article "Self-Discipline Outdoes IQ...."  . This article is typical of some that you may find yourself encountering next year, so I'd like to hear your opinion about three things; the results of the research, how it is related to what you've looked at withing the field of motivation and how you feel about the level of the article itself (comprehension difficulty, presentation of statistics etc.)

  1. I think the results of the research are correct because highly self disciplined adolescents would outperform impulsive adolescents. For instance Taylor and Booker may have the same IQ, but since Talor is more disciplined when it time to do homework and massive assignments Taylor have academically outperformed Booker. Yes I don't think people who have a higher GPA than me are smarter than I am, I simply think that they may have spont a little more time analyzing the material than I did. I think it realtes to motivation because to become so self-disciplined there is something extrinsicly motivating you to become or stay focused on your work or goal. The article was overall good because I agree with many things such as sometimes you have to choose between conflicting desires and impulse in your self discipling process. The only things was kind of confusing was the studies, I was getting lost reading them, despiite that I enjoyed the article.

  2. After reading this article, I decided that I agree that Self - Discipline out rules IQ. However, I stand neutral with the results results. I do believe that determination can outweigh "brains" because without determination you cannot expect yourself to achieve. Determination is similar to motivation because just as motivation turns emotion into action, determination is almost the motivation to achievement as motivation is the drive to emotion. The way the article presents its statistics and results were hard to interpret when I visually saw the results in the charts, but more understandable when I read it throughout the article, although comprehension was difficult then as well.

  3. Honestly, Mrs. Rious, this article is boring(what happened to the video you showed me). As I started to read, I was not MOTIVATED to finish it. But what I'll try to do is read it and give at least some decent feed back, but don't expect a lot because it's not interesting. Typically, the results were not surprising, highly self discinplined students did a lot better than their counterparts. The measurement in the fall predicted more of the variance than that of the IQ. The level the article was not that difficult, I mean I did have to read it more than once to fully understand it. So it was challenging, because my brain was distracted by the smallest interruptions. Though all is well, you should have played the video I saw the day before.

  4. This article was very random. I thought we were soupose to be reading about sex and hunger, but since Mrs. Rious decides to give out the wrong instructions, i guess i can read it anyways... As i read i kinda thought it was a pointless article because everyone knows self determination outways IQ. So while reading the and as i read the results it was kind of a duahhh moment for me. I think no matter how smart anyone may think they are, self determination is everything. You can be "naturally" smart and may never study for anything but someone else comes along who is not as fortunate as you and have to study 3, 4 hours a day. More than likely that person who tries and is determined to pass will get the better grade...

  5. I'm sorry Mrs. Rious, but I have to agree with twin(Edric) and Crayshonda about the article. I found the article to be very boring and pointless and it was hard for me to keep my focus while reading it. As Crayshonda said, "everyone knows self determination outways IQ." If a person doesn't demonstrate determination, then they will be lost and have no sense of direction in life. After reading this article, I can say that if you don't have self-discipline then you don't have leverage. Determination and self-discipline accounts for almost everything rather than just having a high IQ. Having a high IQ doesn't prove that you're smarter than anyone else or it doesn't say that you have high standards, it simply says that your level of intelligence is above average. So people I say this to say, don't outsmart yourself with a "number", have standards and set goal of achievement for yourself! BE OPTIMISTIC!

  6. Well I don't think this article was piontless because i've got something from it but however, it was boring and long. Okay we know self- determination and discipline over-rule IQ and some people lack that in life. As to me, I have both that's why im highly intelligent and prepared for the obsticles to overcome to just to live and be something in life. But just because you lack that, doesn't mean your incapable of accomplishing things in life. It's just you vaule things differently from those who do. Motivvation and determenation drives you a long way in life and to me its a must you have them if you want to suceed and be sucessful. I Mean just cause your smart you still can make a stupid decision as opposed to someone whose less intelligent but make a great decision just off of natural instinct and determination. The results prove that Iq is the underdog and that determination will take you further.

  7. Do know that ill be posting another comment this aritcle/study is to long to be expalined in just one simple response however, i will elaborate on the introduction of this article. i dont find it surprising that those students who poesses self discipline are more likely to come out on top in the end. That student being me has experienced this day-in and day-out. Unfortunately everyone is not born with a silver spoon in their mouth, in fact some of us have to eat with our fingers. lol. but honestly ,every one who has made a contribution in this world WAS not genius, AND THAT'S FIND BECAUSE as we can infer brains is hardly anything with ou self discipline. ill be back with another fabulous response once i have read the out come of the study.

  8. So it appears that i made it back to the blog before you other rats! ive read the outcome of the expirment and it is obvious that that those who consitantly self disciplined them selves performed better than those within a high IQ range, so for all of you that are in the top 10 (brieanyell mc daniel, terrian augustine, jo ellen quinn) just because your IQ is above the standard deviation doesnt mean that you all desever those spots for graduation howeveer i am proud of you , because even though your on top now what about later. and yes if oyu must know i am jealous. just a tad bitt though. but my self discipline outweights your little 4.2's amd 4.0 s.

  9. This article proves an important fact that many students question when it comes to performing well in classes and getting a high gpa. This shows that those people that have high grades doesn't mean they are smarter than others it just means they have more self-discipline. Having self discipline means focusing more on school work than extracurricular activities or watching tv. They also start on their work before everyone else. The higher your IQ means that your level of intelligence is just greater and above average but it doesn't mean that you are on top of the world. And wat was the point of this article??

  10. Well you know that I believe this article wasnt interestingand they didnt have to say all that to explain their point. But the main idea if the article was however true. Being self-discipline doesn't technicallymake you smart, but it gives you the drive and focus needed to make you succedd. Like me, For EXAMPLE I may not have the high gpa as brianyell or but my iq would be high because I strive to do my best like studying and going that extra mile ;) but yeah ms.rious next time please give us blog related to class cause this totally threw me off. Oh && you blowin it Hahaha !

  11. This article was about the difference between a sef disciplined person with a high IQ. Motivation plays in part with this because a sef disciplined person that has out- performed a person with a high IQ is obviosly more motivated. I agree with the statement that no one is smarter than another, it's just simpy some peopla lack sef discipline, which is not unusual. The confusing part of the reading was the different studies because it became boring. Without the explanation of the studies, I already had a grasp of the point of this article.

  12. Okai, urgh! i have to reply to this blog again cuz Rious and her ish is playin with me && my intelligence..anyway, this azrticle is soo true.i agreed with it in somany ways and it made sense as far as school is concernded. in order for the people to have high IQ's, so form of self control had to be present. If there isn't self control present, then you won't go far in life anyway.. so self control can take you further in life then say,and IQ....

  13. In my opinion, the research proved a very obvious fact. That fact is that self-determination will effect how your grades are. Meaning that if your motivation is high for doing well in school, then your grades will be high. So, low determination produces low grades. However, i dont think determination effects your IQ, it seems as though the scores of an IQ are determined by your actual intelligence. The article and research was organized greatly and was well-needed to prove a point. Also, the article was fairly easy to read.

  14. O.M.G I was just checking the blog to see what it could help me study for the exam and I realize my comment for this article wasn't posted. Well here you go rious before you drop my grade ,, I would totally have to agree that self discipline is more important than I.Q. Although being smart is important one must have discipline. Without self discipline people wouldn't study to obtain knowledge and get high I.Q.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ok Ms. Rious so the article is kinda boring, but it does make some good points and I do agree. Self discipline is definitely more important. If you have a I.Q. score, but you don't apply yourself then you will go nowhere. You have to be self disciplined and motivated to get that high I.Q. score, good grades, etc. Self discipline and motivation will always outway I.Q. scores.

  16. For all the people who says this article is boring and long you got a rude awakening coming to you next year. My professor have giving us longer and more uninteresting and more irrelevant articles than this here. By the way I agree with Joellen about this article, because I have a nice lil bust it GPA but I keep getting this undelicious 21 on the ACT test. Children with the ability to motivate themselves are the ones you see on billboards with nice suits on and important phone numbers when they grow up. Why? They were motivated to do so.
