Piaget and Erikson: Stages of Development

Get to know Piaget a little better with this brief overview from UC Berkeley. The take a look at the following series of videos that demonstrate Piaget's Stages:
 Stage 1 - Sensorimotor, Object Permanence (1:03)
Stage 2 - Preoperational, Lack of Conservation (2:16)
Stage 3 - Concrete - Reversibility (0:56)
Stage 4 - Formal - Deductive Reasoning (0:58)

So Piaget's focus was on Cognitive Development, but Erik Erikson was more interested in how our personality and social relationships interact to influence our development. He believed that all humans face common obstacles at different points in our lives. He worked out 8 basic stages of Psychosocial Development common to all. To gain true understanding of the stages of development you should read all the relevant info in your text. You may also want to check out this overview. The following video will MAKE you remember each and every stage of Erikson's for life, but you have to watch the entire thing at least once and give it your full attention. Force yourself yo connect to everything Mr. Britt is doing. It's 18 minutes long, deal with it.

And last but not least, these Developmental Psych Cliff Notes provide an EXCELLENT overview of lifespan development. Click around on the tabs on the left for more detail

  1. The video was very helpful, a little corny, but helpful. The two i really didnt undertand was the automobile in a shoe and shia inn a tree, yeahhh didnt quite get those lol. It wasnt that bad being 18 minutes long, now i just have to focus on understanding each concept and how it works! :) lucky for me i printed out the overview. muahahahah (evil laugh) lol

  2. Yes I dealt with it and did not like it. Psych! It was a'ight. I like discussing development. It makes me think of myself. But anyway when I click on the last video I said,"not this guy again." The last vid was my favorite. But I don't know if Mrs. Rious would like #7.......hint hint, just kidding. (See u in class)

  3. -Aww Little Simon was toooo cute lol.. But yea, what the experiemnt was talking about was so true. I'd often have the experience of playing with my litle cousin, and I would hide her toy, then take it out and put it behine my hands and ask her where is the toy, and she would walk to the spot where I had hid the toy instead of walking behind me to look in my hands...This kinda proves that babies are retarted at ah young age...faget wat the studies say lol...

  10. Now first of all why would you make people watch a 18 minute long video, People don't have time for this. SIKE!!! but anyways it was kind of long and i did get a lil side tracked. I didn't get the part about putting a car in a shoe I mean it would be better if you explained this to us. This development chapter is interesting to me because some of the things can relate to my life and babies not really having knowledge.

  11. YES YOU HAVE A QUIZ TOMORROW!!!!!!!! 20 multiple choice questions, 4 short answer.

    Be able to explain:

the basic idea behind Erikson's theory

the difference between continuity/discontinuity and a psychologist for each view (since you were smart enough to read the blog try using Chomsky and Piaget)

why we've developed a stress response that can really mess us up

    and everything else :)

  12. Not only this chapter but the videos were also very interesting to me. Why you put up a 18 minute long video i don't know, but after i got over my laziness i actually watched it without any interruptions. Everything was GREAT but the car and shoe thing lost me... overall i learned alot

  13. Ok so the video was a lil lengthy, but I liked it. At least now I can remember Erikson's 8 Stages.

  14. wowwwwww!

It was very helpful tho, the guy was just kind of boring, i caught myself drifting away millions of times, i made it through though!
i like the video when the lady asked the children about glass cups & feathers & hammers & stuf..
    Like they're dumb or sumthing!

  15. So hi psychkids is me Chelay back once again. its obvious that i have read and now i am commenting on the blog. i can not stress enough how helpful it is to log on to your computer from home and still learn -its amazing . *iluvit* jenny honey your doing a great job with the blog and teaching as well. Now time for me to elaborate on the vids . I enjoyed all of them but of course the last one stands out the most i mean it is 18 mins long compared to the 1 and 2 min vids but the strategy that the guy uses is beyond brilliant it helps even if you are not paying close attention . i am definitely going to use these types of methods during undergrad this fall. For the babies i wish people would stop calling all babies cute there is evidence that there are some ugly babies, however the baby vids prove exactly what the psychologist were predicting and have theorized. With out further or do that is all i have to say.. by the way its 3:38 am WTF am, i doing up. i have a serious case of GPA hunger

  20. I totally agree with shawn, the 18 minute video was AWESOME, I LOVED IT!!! You were right Mrs. Rious I only had to watch it once to understand it and actually remember them. It's a very helpful technique to use and I will definitely use neumonic devices in college to help me with my memory. This video was very interesting. Oh, and that video about the feather breaking the glass I thought it was crazy because how can a feather break glass??? UNBELIEVABLE!!! And the one about the baby and the cups of juice was cute and I liked it. I love this blog and you should keep the vids coming. I can now CONFIDENTLY name all 8 stages of development. AH COME ON, LET'S GO!!!!!! LOL J/P HAHAHAHA :)

  21. wassup ms. rious! today ispent the day on this blog. the videos and overviews are very informative and for the most part very boring. After watching the boring videos on the deveopmental stages and erikson's theory i came to the conclusion that they are true. And i also have a general idea about the whole thing. But i dislike the fact that the erikson stages video was 18 minutes long. however, thank you because this was useful and very helpful.

  22. Ms Rious I'm responding to the stages. I loved each video but stage 4 about formal-deductive reasoning was really confusing. You need to present this to the class to have a class decussion and elaborate on other people's views. I like that long a** video but I'm going to need to look at it a few more times when I'm really focused.
