It's a cliche to say that we spend at least one-third of our lives asleep, but it's true, which probably explains why it's a cliche. Anyway, check out any or all of the following videos on the sleep cycle. They're all relatively short and the more sources you have the better it'll stick!
"The Sleep Cycle" a slow-moving cartoon, but will help
"The Sleep Cycle", not as slow, but with bizarre choice of music
SUPER SHORT! 30 seconds!!!! Sleep Cycle and more
Guess what? Bad things can happen when you don't get enough sleep! Although there isn't a one among you that has ever fallen asleep in my class, you know it happens. Check out this 4 minute NPR podcast on teens and their sleep deficit. There's also a really good Q & A section on the same topic, give it a once over.
And, finally, what would happen if you stayed up for 8 days straight? Staying up 24 hours straight has the same impact as being totally drunk (legally), so how 'bout 8 days? Find out by watching a little overview of the famous sleep deprivation experiment by Peter Tripp, a dj trying to raise money for a charity. Also check out this creepy little retelling of the experiment, shockingly there's actually more information about what happened to poor Tripp afterwards.
Poor little Peter! :/ It's amazing the effects of no sleep can have. That sweet man turned all looney and whatnot. I think the experiment was completely unethical, being that Peter was never the same and his marriage failed because of this darn experiment! You know what? I think Peter should have sued! Sued, I tell you!!!!
ReplyDeleteDamn , Peter... And I say that with no regrets. It is crazy what no sleep can do to you. I have problems staying up for 12-15 hours, This Peter thang is a Tripp..Haha...Get It? wheres my extra points... J Dawg

ReplyDeleteLol at Harvey. The videos were kinda boring. Yawn! Except the 30 second one. I don't understand how Tripp did it. I wouldn't have lasted pass 1 day. It sucks that this experiment ruined his life particularly his marriage.
ReplyDeleteMy sleep patterns all messed up from fooling with twitter and tv all night Ms. Rious... I wake up in the mornings going crazy on everybody. I need to start getting my rest at night and stop waiting until 10 o'clock to start doing homework instead of socializing all day AND night! I have life and sleep all mixed up. Shame on me ):
ReplyDeleteI didn't know sleep deprivation could do all of that to you. My goodness. Maybe I should start going to sleep more before I turn all psychotic. Anyway, I liked the 30 second video because it kept my attention the whole time unlike the other two. Whooooo! Time to go to sleep :D
ReplyDeletepodcast: no chocolate after 2, DISAGREE ! We should take a nap midday, Agree ! probably in 2nd period. haha I didn't know your average highschooler stayed up at 12 i thought it was only one tring to do last minute assignments.
ReplyDeleteThat peter video was very creepy but they short videos kept my attention more. I want be trying to stay up late anymore scarred me for life :( thanks rious
ReplyDeleteThat would be cool to make our own video like the other kids did. They sumed it up pretty well. The video helped kinda sorta not really maybe just a lil bit ! 24 hours without sleep is like being legally drunk haha who knew. Maybe I wet the bed because I am hyper active.
ReplyDeleteSo is sleepwalking even real? I dont think it is because how can you walk and sleep at the same time? I'd like to know more about that.
ReplyDeleteI feel so sorry for peter. The 30-sec video was nice. These videos made me realize how important getting sleep is. Getting deprived of your sleep is terrible.Peter was so sweet in the beginning, then he went all crazy. I would have gotten more sleep if Ms. Rious didn't post this up.Right after this comment..I'm going straight to sleep!
ReplyDeleteThe sleep cycle is still kind of confusing since it uses waves but the fact of having hallucinations in stage 1 actually happens. I never thought that what it was when you weren't sleep all the way but dreaming and someone wakes you up. I liked the experiment also. It was very interesting. I knew sleep had affects on you but I didn't know perminantly. I also wonder do I sleepwalk or anything.
ReplyDeleteI love this chapter so much. The stages of the sleep cycle actually are right. Although I think I may have some case of narcolepsy because when I sleep sometimes I go right into REMing. Its weird and scary. The Peter Tripp video really scared me he really stayed awake for 201 hours. I thought he would go right back to normal after a good nights sleep but he didn't. Poor guy. I stayed up for 24 hours once but I was groggy and I couldn't really stand up. Guess I know how it feels to be legally drunk without even drinking but anyway like I said this chapter is absolutey cool and I love it.
