As promised, the video we did not have time for in class; "The Linguistic Genius of Babies". The video is a 10-minute TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) talk. Please watch the video and comment below.
Also, If you have extra time, "Language Acquisition" is a fascinating full length (about 1 hour) documentary on language. At least watch the first ten minute segment.
this video did make me think. it brought up a couple of questions. i can say though it was sort of intriguing.
ReplyDeleteSo.... I’m a little jealous of my baby cousin. I envy the fact that they can discriminate between languages at a certain age. I don’t really understand the “statistics of language part”. But yea, homegirl did her thang. And I hope they do develop the treatment for those that have difficulty learning =)
ReplyDelete-____- this is Paris. I don't know how to change my name.
ReplyDeleteThis man really recorded every second of his son's life for 3 years. If that's not dedication I don't know what is. I thought it was cool how the baby went from saying ga ga, goo, goo, wa ya, wa wa, wa der, to water in months. "Babies are geniuses until their 7..." OMG that's so cool that babies can differentiate languages at such a young age. We were just talking bout language in anthropology and my teacher mentioned how language itself isnt understood but it's our identity in a sense.
ReplyDeleteI always wanted to know how we learn language as a child. These clips help demonstrate it to quite well. The statistics of language is real cool and I wish we still processed language like infants. Maybe I would have did a lot better in foreign languages.
ReplyDeleteBABY GENIUS, lol
ReplyDeletethis is so cool, the little ones can actually pick up more than me. To me I think about the babies brain being a sponge that soaks up everything all around it (spongebob :D)
I like how in the video it said "babies take statistics" it sounds educated..
And I also thought it was interesting how babies can only make stats from a human being.
PS.. Emma looked hilarous on the MEG!!!
The video was cool, it was interesting to see how babies actually learn a language at a young age.the baby know more then me :p NOT COOL
ReplyDeleteThe video was very informative. Babies are really smarter than you think. I'm jealous that they're somewhat smarter than me. The way babies process language is very interesting. If I could process language like babies than I probably be speaking 10 different languages. So cool !
ReplyDeleteP.S. I wanna seat in that oversized hair dryer lol
This video was really cool. I heard the little "babies are geniuses" thing before, too. I heard that babies are like smarter when they're young, than when they grow up because they absorb more information and observe more and whatnot during their younger years. Anywho, that's what this made me think of.
ReplyDeleteBabies are so smart! I really disn't think they were as smart as they are.. I always thought babies were born dumb and got smarter over time. But anyway, i wish we could process language at this age like we did when we were babies /: Overrall the video was interesting.. it just made me a lil' jealous.
ReplyDeletethe video basically answered everything i asked last class . it filled in gaps that left me in a cloud of confusion . i wish i was filmed for 3 years . im a tad jelly . we should give babies a little more credit : especially people who say oh , he a baby he doesnt know anything .
ReplyDeleteThus post was very interesting. I learned all the things that I have questioned. He recorded everything that he experienced
ReplyDeletethis blog was interesting showed that we are actually smart way before we are considered smart or dumb or slow learners by society,! we acquire so much knowledge early on in life, really the basic knowledge that we think we learned in preschool is reallly only enhanced there this was a great blog bout time ms rious! _ashanti
ReplyDeleteThis video was really cool... but now I am mad at all of the parents in America from screwing up our abilities to learn other languages almost. If parents sort of introduced us to foreign languages at a younger age we would not have struggled in French and Spanish so much. I curse the system /:
ReplyDeleteIt was cool how the lady in the video referred to little babies as "citizens of the world" because of their ability to make different syllable sounds even if they are not a part of their language. It is not until babies become older when they start to recognize and adapt to sounds exclusive to their language, then they are called "culture-bound listeners".
ReplyDeletetest
ReplyDelete"It take a human being for babies to take their statistics." I find that weird. Poor Emma looked stuck and constipated even though they said she was free to move. Amen to Yanna!
ReplyDeletenice, this helped me learn
