Celebrate Labor Day with.... Research Methods and Statistics!

Hopefully all the work you've already done has led you to a greater understanding of Methodologies and Statistics. If not, there's still hope for you!

The 2008 Free Response question will give you the chance to either put everything you know into words, or it will give you the opportunity to figure it all out for the first time. Before you begin, you'll need to give yourself some background on the experiment referenced in the question. Solomon Asch originally conducted this experiment in the 1950s. You should read "The Asch Effect" on pages 571-2 to familiarize yourself with his method and then watch a version of the experiment from the 70's.  The question asks you to think about participant responses in Asch's experiments might be related to the idea of cognitive dissonance (pgs 587-8) and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (p.322). Familiarize yourself with these concepts before you begin your response.

The symbols, formulas and graphs for interpreting statistics that we viewed in class, should assist in calculating the Standard Deviation for 3rd period test scores.

  1. this what alot of students do in class when a question is being asked. they feel under the pressure of other students opinion about being different. so because they dont want to feel different they go along with the group. also because if they dont want to be the only person to get it wrong because of what their peers would say or do.

  2. You're so right Wesley. I can't tell you how much it sucks as a teacher to see brilliant, funny, cool kids edit themselves for the crowd, but it's awesome when a student does the equivalent of standing up and saying "that line is definitely longer!"

  3. I see conformity happening every day. It happens to me a lot. Sometimes when students all say an answer and my answer is different I go alone with theirs, afraid of mines being incorrect. It's similar to peer pressure. The video gave a great explanation of conformity.

  4. Remember kids the point of the video is so that you have a grip on the experiment that is being referenced in the free response question. Conformity, obedience, group behavior and more won't come into detailed focus until Chapter 14, "Social Psychology". Please email me with any questions.

  5. I think I have a better idea of what they were trying to do now in the experiment on our free response questions. It's an excellent way to show how an example of how they were trying to find out how much other people can influence one person's answer.
