You Actually Don't "See" This!

I hope that after today's class you're either congratulating yourself for keeping up, or kicking yourself for falling behindEither way, you need too get with these videos about auditory and optical processing.

First up, vision; here's an incredibly simple and incredibly short path to understanding trichromatic theory. Feeling childish? Here's a cartoon that makes pretty easy work of comprehending how light enters the eye and works its way to the vision cortex. I'm ALWAYS of the opinion that examining the same thing from two different sources is helpful, with that in mind, check out "How the Human Eye Works".
And last but not least, for those of you truly devoted to the study of Psychology and a general understanding of life, a Darwinian take on how the eye may have evolved. (Choose either QuickTime or Real Player).

And now, for Auditory Processing, this video is a bit long, has more detail than you really need, but the animation is outrageous and sublime. Watch the entire thing for a deeper understanding of how vibrations turn into what we call "sound".

  1. These videos are very informative. The one about the woman with the retina problems made my eyes feel very fragile and the auditory processing video gave my ears a tickling sensation.

  2. WOW! I'm really starting to gain a better understanding of this "SENSATIONS" stuff. So, my understanding of the trichromatic theory is that colors do exist in the world. However, only three specialized colors exist which are red, green, and blue. People who are color blind can obviously only see shades, which are grey, black, and white, however, grey being the most common one. I have to admit, these videos are really helping me out and are very useful for me. Keep them coming!

  6. The videos were helpful however i think that the reading in the text gives a more accurate understanding of how things operate because while reading it registers although it does the exact same with listening to videos, but in my own oppinion textbook reading has out numbered videos. In addition to that the textbook reading and following with a video is the perfect combination.

  7. Okai, so i'm commenting on the video again... the video about Auditory processing was okay but it really wasn't helpful and only confused me..are there anymore enomics? did i spell that right?? lol...

  8. So Mizer, I know that ya'll loved the mnemonics and that they worked their funky magic, but when we get to the units on memory and learning you'll see that different devices are better suited for different tasks. (That is, our brain is wired to work with different types of information in different ways). So let's think about this. In this unit what would mnemonics be good for? At first glance I'd say memorizing structures like those of the eye and the ear, maybe basic Gestalt laws to, but the concepts of thresholds, sensory processing and perceptual theory? No. These concepts are fundamentally different from "the hippocampus is part of the limbic system and is involved in memory". Most of what we need to tackle in Psychology is just not going to be as straightforward as that.

Mnemonics work well for certain things and not others. Tell ya what, you describe, on this forum, what they're good for and there's a nice chunk of extra credit in it to use as needed.

The stuff of perception in particular are IDEAS that need to be turned over and examined in your big fat three-layered brain, very little memorization to it, just cold hard THINKING. I know your up to it girly.

  9. These videos made the chapter seem confusing!I think its because the videos went more in depth than the book. Maybe because it was boring also, the only one that caught my attention was the lady with the eye diease.

  10. The video with the cartoons confused the hell out of me. I don't know what they was saying. but when I seen the one about one about the woman with the re-- something disease. It gave me a clear understanding of how the eye bends light, and how some people have a disorder. I think you should choose some more understanding videos that will help us.

  11. I liked the video about the lady with the eye diesease. It got more in depth with how we "see". I DEFINITELY did NOT LIKE the video with cartoons, I was soooooo LOST. The way they explained it was STUPID.
